Red Light Encounter (2023)

Driving in my car on a rainy day

The sky’s as gray as the road

The radio’s playing the same old tunes

To dull out the morning routines

Forced to stop at a red light

I look to my left and there she is

An eye meets mine and we share a gaze

Her sadness overwhelms my soul

The pain in her eyes, the fear in her sight

The scar on her face, uncertainty awaits

Doomed from the start, but she didn’t know

It eats me alive and tears me asunder

The deeper I look into her eyes

The more I see her gentle soul

She’s filled with kindness, of that I’m sure

But not allowed to be herself

The light turns green and there she goes

Away from me, beyond my reach

Angered by the thought that I could’ve helped

I’m torn by letting her down

She’s off to the slaughterhouse

To meet her grizzly fate

And you?

How do you like your steak?
